BURSERA SIMARUBABursera simaruba, commonly known as gumbo-limbo, is a small to medium-sized tree that grows to 30 meters tall. It is also referred to as the Tourist Tree because the tree's bark is red and peeling, like the skin of sunburned tourists. The gumbo-limbo is found all over the world from southern Florida to Venezuela.
The gumbo-limbo is a very useful plant both economically and ecologically. It is well adapted to very different habitats so it can grow almost anywhere. Because of this, the plant is planted in coastal areas for several reasons. The gumbo-limbo is considered one of the most wind-tolerant trees and can survive hurricanes. They may be planted as wind protection for crops and roads if stuck in good soil. It is also suitable for light construction, can be used as firewood, and the tree's resin is used as a glue, varnish, and incense. The gumbo-limbo is also the traditional wood used for the manufacture of carousel horses in America. |
